Lunch and Learn Virtual Trainings for Parents 

presented by the Atascosa-McMullen Special Education Cooperative

December 9, 2020 – Alphabet Soup - Special Education has a language all its own full of acronyms and special terms.  Join us for a brief lesson on the Top 10 terms you may hear at your child’s next ARD meeting.

January 13, 2021 – Top 3 Tips on Preparing for the ARD MeetingJoin us to learn 3 important ways to prepare for your child’s ARD meetings.  Parent participation in the ARD process results in better success for children.

February 3, 2021 – Know Your Rights – This session will highlight 5 important features of the Notice of Procedural Safeguards that every parent needs to know.

March 3, 2021 – The ARD Agenda – The ARD meeting follows a specific order as outlined in our federal special education law.  Join this session to learn about the stages of the ARD meeting and how you can contribute to the decisions made for your child.

March 17, 2021 – Transition Talk: What’s in a Transition Plan? – Transition planning begins at age 14 or sooner.  Learn the basics of how to determine the next steps for your child as they transition out of high school.

April 7, 2021 – The Texas Autism Supplement in a Nutshell – 11 strategies must be considered for all students identified with autism.  Join us for a brief overview of this very important part of the ARD process.

April 21, 2021 – What Are Related Services? - Speech, occupational therapy and psychological services are only a few of the Related Services that may be needed by students with disabilities. This session will briefly introduce you to the array of related services that are available.

May 5, 2021 – Fun with a Purpose…Learning Activities for Summer - Add some purpose to your child's play with terrific sensory and motor skill development activities.  Lots of practical, easy and fun activities will be presented.  Fun with a purpose this summer will reap academic rewards in the classroom!

May 19, 2021 - Building an Introduction Portfolio for your Child - Student Introduction Portfolios are a great way to share important information about your child beyond what is found in the IEP.  Join us to learn what information to include in your child’s portfolio.  Start next school year on a positive note by presenting this information in a fun, creative and informative way.

All trainings will be hosted by Brenda Nelson.  Brenda is an ARD Facilitator for the Co-op and the parent of a young adult son on the autism spectrum who successfully navigated the Special Education process from ECI through
High School graduation.  She has a passion for helping other parents who share the journey of caring for a child with a disability.  Brenda will be joined by other members of the Co-op who will lend their professional expertise to
